Meadowlands get world-class matches

EAST RUTHERFORD - Manchester United and Juventus, two of the world's most famous soccer clubs, have agreed to meet at Giants Stadium next summer.

The match will take place July 30 or 31, New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority president George Zoffinger said following Thursday's monthly board meeting.

The game is one of seven scheduled for the Meadowlands in 2003 as part of a joint agreement between the NJSEA and the MetroStars that is expected to produce an unprecedented level of world-class soccer in the metropolitan area. Both parties have been working on the schedule for weeks, and agreements are starting to trickle in.

The Argentinian national team is under contract, and Zoffinger hopes to have England signed up as the opposition. The Netherlands, Italy, and Ecuador national teams are expected to play at Giants Stadium, as will the Barcelona club team. The American and Brazilian teams also are being pursued.
