U.S. Women's Under 21 National Team Brazil Trip Serra Negra, São Paulo, Brazil May 15 to May 25, 2003
San Francisco based coach, Toby Rappolt was along for this trip and submitted this report and analysis: The United States Women's Under 21 National Team traveled to Brazil on May 14, 2003. The primary purpose of the trip was to experience traveling a long distance to compete and live in a foreign environment in preparation for the Nordic Cup. The Nordic Cup is an Under 21 Women's National Team tournament that takes place in Denmark this September. THE COMPETITION The primary goal of the Americans was to play highly competitive matches in a foreign environment. According to the players and the American team's staff, that goal was met and exceeded. The Americans found all the Brazilian teams to be very skillful and very well organized. The team played four games in total, two against the Brazilian Women's Under 21 National Team and one game each against women's club team, SAAD F.C. of São Paulo and Santos F.C.. Both clubs teams included several players from the Brazilian Women's National Team. All games were played at the Estadio Municipal Antonio Barbosa Pinto da Fonseca Serra Negra, the home stadium for the city's 5th division men's team. The games were produced by the Serra Negra Sport and Tourism Authority. Each game began with young Brazilian gymnasts carrying the American and Brazilian flags into the stadium and onto the field. The two teams then joined the procession onto the field for both national anthems, followed by fireworks. The games were televised live on national television, and officiated by the three highest-ranking women referees in Brazil. The Brazilian players themselves possess an extra quality that is known in their country as "ginga". Ginga is that special intangible that American basketball players refer to as "got game". Ginga is a skill that cannot be taught. It is learned from watching and playing against players that possess it. The country of Brazil is full of these players. Ginga is a feeling. A rhythm. A deception. A trick. A dance. That individual moment of skillful brilliance. The Brazilians had "it" and the individual playing performance of their players was often breathtaking and entertaining. American women players rarely if ever face this type of special quality. American women don't possess "it" and may never. But they will have to play against "it" and these games gave the players that special experience that can't be found at home. The American staff and players were completely satisfied, if not surprised, by the skill and organization of the Brazilian teams. A well-organized team that also has ginga is a formidable opponent indeed. i.e. The Brazilian Men's National Team
THE BRAZILIAN PEOPLE The American players and staff made numerous comments about how friendly and helpful all of the Brazilians were that they met at the hotel and in the town of Serra Negra. They found the hotel staff to be especially accommodating to their requests. There were many positive comments made about the friendly waiters in the hotel restaurant. But as this writer found, this is normal everyday behavior for Brazilians. To be rude to a Brazilian, all one has to do is to not say hello and not smile. ACTIVITIES The additional activities the players particularly enjoyed were shopping, a Jeep Tour, Churrascarria and watching a professional soccer game. Shopping was particularly attractive due to the strength of the American dollar. For example, an authentic replica national team replica jersey costing $79.99 in the United States costs $30.00 to $35.00 in Brazil. While shopping in the city of Serra Negra was more than adequate, Soccer Futuro also organized a special bus trip to the city of Campinas to visit a huge shopping mall full of bargains. On this same trip Soccer Futuro took the players to a "Churrascaria", a Brazilian specialty barbeque restaurant serving 12 to 15 different types of meats. Another highlight for the players was the Jeep trip to the top Morro Pelado in Águas de Lindóia. This scenic point is one of the highest points in the area and provided a breathtaking panoramic view of the area. The American players also enjoyed the attendance at a full professional men's match in the city of Campinas. The players commented on the skill and speed of play and the fanaticism of the home team's supporters around them. SOCCER FUTURO STAFF The American players especially liked the organization and attention they received by the Soccer Futuro staff. In addition to Prof. Emilio Miranda and Mike Keohane ,there was a very special chaperone named Julia Goes. Julia is a São Paulo native and attended the University of Nevada at Las Vegas for five years on a volleyball scholarship. She spoke English better than most of the Americans(!), and was always available to assist players for translation purposes and numerous other needs that were required by the players. SAFETY The American players felt safe at all times. In addition to the team's own security guard, the Brazilian Football Federation provided several security personnel at the hotel, at games and on the bus excursions. There was never a time when any of the security personnel were required. TRANSPORTATION The team was met at the airport by three Soccer Futuro representatives and escorted directly to a waiting bus. The bus then took the players directly to the city of Serra Negra and their hotel. Unlike American buses, the Brazilian version (the major form of transportation for inter-city travel) is really quite luxurious. The buses are large, clean, cool, quiet and extremely comfortable. Seats provide much more width and leg room than an airline seat. In fact, the buses were so comfortable that most of the team would fall asleep on the bus rides. In the final analysis, the trip for the American players and staff was a complete success. The tour met and exceeded their expectations. Asked if they would ever like to visit Brazil again with the university or club teams, their response was a resounding and unanimous YES!
