The 2003
Division 3 San Francisco Soccer League Champions, San Francisco
City Football Club (www.sfcfc.com), invite you to help kick-off our
2004 season. We figured we'd have one last blow-out before we get
serious and cut back on our alcohol consumption. Since the season
is long and demanding, we've put together this evening of good
friends, good music and good times as a team fundraiser. We'll have
the live rockin' sounds of Buckfast (www.buckfastmusic.com) at
10:30p.m. as well as DJs Tuwie, 3D, and Jokab supplying the
fundamentals of funk, hip hop, reggae, soul, breaks all night long.
Admission is only $10 and there's plenty of room. Please do us a
favor and send this to all of your friends, family and co-workers
who'd be interested in helping out a fabulous team by having a
great time with us at the Saloon... and since we don't see most of
you at the games we definitely better see you at the party!

Coaching Corner: Switching the Play |
|
|
Help children
enjoy the game
By: Mick
Smoothey, NSCAA Regional Technical Director
Objectives
- To
Switch the Ball Away From Pressure
- To Maintain Width and Depth in Possession
1. Warm Up: 5 v 3 (+4 support) Keepaway
5 v 3 (+4 support) keep away. Goal for getting ball to wide support. Support
player must play ball back in to a different player who uses his/her team to
switch ball to different side of field. Ensure quick rotation of outside
players to ensure it is a warm up!
Alternative
Warm Up: 9
v 3 keepaway: Developing Width
Score a goal each time the ball is received by a player who has moved to the
outside of the area, facing towards field. Defending team scores by making 3
consecutive passes.
Coaching
Points:
- Open up body to turn away
- Communication
- Movement to open area
- Awareness of other players width and depth
2. 6 v 4 with field divided in thirds
Begin with numbers up and designated wide players to ensure success (e.g.
6 v 4). Ball can only be passed twice (or once to make it more challenging)
in each third before it must be switched to a different zone. The team with
fewer numbers plays without conditions. After a goal or a shot the GK plays
back in to the team of 6 players who turn and attack in the opposite
direction.
Variations:
- Even numbers (5 v 5)
attacking only one end i.e. as in a regular game
- Limit touches
Note: Fields should be short but wide
Coaching
Points:
- Awareness of opponents and teammates
- Movement of support players
- Keep ball moving away from pressure
3. 4 v 4 to Three Small Goals
Regular
scrimmage except teams can score in any one of the three goals. Two GK’s
protect three goals
Variation:
- Use two wide goals only and
take out central goals
- Use support players instead
of GK’s
Coaching
Points:
- Look
diagonally before attacking down channel
- Distance and angles of support
- Width and depth in possession
4. Regular Game

San Francisco Futbol Club Team Tryouts
Announced for Super Y League |
|
The fastest growing and
most competitive soccer league in the country is coming to San
Francisco! All competitive players
are invited to represent San Francisco in the SUPER Y LEAGUE for the
Spring/Summer 2004 season. Top
players from the Mission, Viking and neighboring community leagues are
encouraged to participate.
The Super Y League is
steadily becoming the first choice for youth players serious about
soccer. Many of Northern California’s
top soccer clubs, such as DVSC, Ballistic, Mustang, Bay Oaks, Santa Rosa,
Santa Cruz and San Juan currently field teams in this most competitive
league, which plays their games during the spring and summer months.
What is Super Y?
Super Y is formed through
US Club Soccer, and is completely separate from CYSA. Players can play both CYSA and US Club
Soccer at the same time. Players play
on their current CYSA club teams for the fall and winter, and then play on
their San Francisco Futbol Club (SFFC) team during the spring and summer
months. As a matter of fact, players
are strongly encouraged to remain on their current club teams while
participating in Super Y with SFFC.
There can be a total of 26
players on each team, although on 18 will be rostered for each game.
Teams will be formed
through tryouts. Tryouts will be held
on January 24th and 31st for all players from San
Francisco and neighboring communities.
These tryouts will be open to all players from ALL districts, as there
are no boundaries in Super Y League.
Teams will be formed based upon the calendar year in which the player
was born. For example, is a player
was born in 1988, he/she will play on the “1988” team.
Tryouts will be held at
Franklin Square Park and Youngblood/Coleman Playground in San Francisco. The tryout schedule for each age group is
listed below.
SFFC will field 6 teams in
the Super Y League for 2004. We will
have 2 girls teams; 1989 & 1990, and 4 boys teams; 1987, 1988, 1989 and
1990.
Coaches for these six teams
will be present at the tryouts, and they have been selected based upon
experience, reputation, level of current license, and college
affiliation. Each team will have a
coach and an assistant coach/trainer.
League play begins in
mid-May, so practices will begin sometime in March. All attempts will be made so that current club teams are not
conflicted. Players will return to
their respective CYSA teams in the fall for Redwood, Abronzino or other
league play.
San Francisco finally has
the opportunity to let all of the best players play together on teams of pure
age, without disrupting their current CYSA team. This will afford the serious soccer players a chance to play at
the highest level of competitive youth soccer available today.
For additional information, or if you have any
questions, please call Illia Song at 415-664-6888.
Tryout Schedule:
January 24th and 31st (either
day):
Year Gender Time Location
1989 Girls 8:30 AM-11 AM Youngblood/Coleman
(Mendell St., SF)
1990 Girls NOON-2:30 PM Youngblood/Coleman
1989 Boys 8:30 AM-11 AM Franklin
Square (17th & Bryant)
1990 Boys NOON-2:30 PM Franklin
Square
1988 Boys 3:00-5:00 PM Youngblood/Coleman
1987 Boys 3:00-5:00 PM Franklin/Square
Note:
Players should bring shoes, shin guards, ball and water to the
tryouts.

Community Workshops |

The
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
& The Positive
Coaching Alliance E!
SPONSORS and
The David B. Gold
Foundation
NEWLY
RE-DESIGNED WORKSHOP FOR COACHES:
Wednesday,
January 28, 7 - 9 pm
WORKSHOP
FOR PARENTS:
Wednesday,
February 4, 7 - 9 pm
The JCCSF
Recreation Department is sponsoring two community-wide workshops
conducted by the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) of Stanford University.
These free workshops are for all members of the community that have
a connection with or interest in youth athletics in San Francisco. The PCA
is a non-profit organization based at Stanford University that promotes
a "Positive Coaching Mental Model". Its objective is to “transform youth
sports so that sports can transform youth.” The JCCSF
& PCA share the philosophy that involvement in sports can make a
very positive impression on a child’s life. Participation in athletics programs
provides an opportunity for children to learn that concepts in sports
carry far beyond the field. Integrity, respect, discipline and teamwork are
important values that can positively affect a child’s performance in the
classroom, at home and throughout life. The first
workshop is designed to help coaches learn ways to implement these
philosophies into their own team experience. The second workshop
helps parents learn these philosophies so that they can be consistently
reinforced from both parents and coaches.
Workshops
will take place in the JCCSF’s Gallanter Hall, 3200
California Street at Presidio.
Tours of
our new facility begin at 6:00 p.m. on the evening
of the workshop. Call to reserve a space!
