Dutch Coaching Clinic

"How to create effective training sessions"

Based on the KVNB (Royal Dutch Soccer Union) Principles and Methods

Saturday May 22 & Sunday May 23, 2004

Sea Cloud Park – Foster City, California

Participation to the Clinic is limited

Coaching soccer is not an easy job; it’s much more difficult than coaching many other sports because the size of the field, the lack of time-outs, and the continuous movement of the ball and players. The best coaching we can provide young developing players is to provide them with enough preparation that they can deal with a dynamic game before the game begins. Player development, preparation and proper training sessions are vital in teaching our young players. Some of the best players in the world have been coached based on the Dutch (KVNB) principles of coaching.

Coaching soccer is a science and an art. However, without having a solid foundation, it can be a long road to becoming a successful coach

 Why a Science?

The science of coaching is the ability to teach the techniques and all of the dimensions of Soccer: Tactics, Technique, Conditioning, Mental Preparation, Nutrition and Lifestyle.

Why an Art?

The art of coaching is the hard part. It's the ability to teach and motivate a player or teams. In the same way that a mathematician does not necessarily make a good math teacher, a soccer player does not necessarily make a good coach. True teachers have the ability to understand each player and know what, when and how to teach, and understand that each player is unique. Coaches who truly understand the art of coaching are easy to spot. Watch them speaking to the team and players – you’ll see every players eyes on the coach, absorbing everything they are saying.

What to do in training sessions and how to do it is the focus of this Coaching Clinic. This will be dealt with not only in theory but also in practice.

The coaching clinic is based on some of the coaching principles of KVNB (Royal Dutch Soccer Union) and will provide you with a basic understanding on creating the right structure for your coaching sessions.

Text Box:   Instructor – Ton De Hoop

Ton de Hoop is known for his outstanding ability to teach the game of soccer at all levels. Coach de Hoop has a special knack for achieving impressive results with younger soccer players. This charismatic master of soccer is a professor at Holland’s Central Institute of Education (CIOS Academy), where he trains Holland’s top professional soccer coach candidates. He is also an instructor at the National Sports centre of the Royal Dutch Soccer Union (KVNB). Ton de Hoop believes in providing first-hand instruction. He personally develops each instructional curriculum.

Some of his last students and participants at his coaching courses were famous International Players like, Ruud Krol, John Neeskens, Danny Blind, Hans van Breukelen and Gerald Vanenburg. Besides providing soccer training, Ton is also teaching management skills, stress management, and communication in relation to soccer at the highest level of game.

Coaching Clinic Sessions Overview

Session 1

Saturday

May 22. 2003

Session 2

Saturday

May 23, 2003

Session 3

Sunday

May 23, 2003

Time:

4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Time:

9:00 am – 12 Noon

Time:

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

In this session Ton will explain the game of soccer. What needs to be done in youth training sessions, what comes first and what comes next, will depend on age and ability of the players. After the theory session participants of the course will participate in the practice session with a group of players under his personal guidance.

In this session Ton will focus on technical training. What are the most important technical skills players need to know, how can we teach them to your players and how can we recognize good from bad performances.

This session is centered on the tactical training. What does the game asks and how can we start working on tactics using appropriate exercises. Ton will discuss the objectives of different tactical sessions and what do look for and do during the session.

A youth team will be used in practice to explain the coaches what to look for. At the end of the Coaching Clinic, each participant will receive a Certificate of Completion (Recognized by CIOS - the Central Institute of Education Sport Coaches).

Where to find Beep Test Recordings/Information

one note: this is calibrated to 15 meters = 16.5 yards. Most beep tests are 20 yards, I hear...

source: http://www.topendsports.com/testing/faq.htm#glossary

The only link that I have come across for a downloadable beep test is the following. Unfortunately, reading the details of this test, it is only conducted over 15 meters. Therefore, the timing may be different to the 20m beep test. Use with caution.

http://www.policecareer.co.uk/fitnessmedical/thebleeptest.asp

Tonight I just found this, Australian army?

http://www.defence.gov.au/army/hq8bde/jobs/fitness.htm

1) The Beep Test

The first test is the 'Multistage fitness test' or 'beep test'. In this test, you run to and fro along a 20 metre track (usually in a Gym), keeping up with a series of beeps on a cassette. The timing of the beeps gradually increases until you can no longer keep up and this defines the level achieved. The minimum requirement for both males and females is Level 7.5 or 56 shuttles for a total of 1,120 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds.
