Coaching Corner: Training the Central Midfielder (Part 4 of 4) |
|
| By Roland Loy, German A-License
(Courtesy of Success in Soccer)
This is part 4 in a four-part series that will focus on training central midfield players. Part 1 dealt with defensive exercises, while part 2 focused on building the attack. Part three addressed passing to the front runners, while the fourth and final installment will concentrate on shooting.
1. SETTING UP A SHOT
Set up
Two forwards play two 1 v. 1s against two man-markers inside the penalty box, in front of a goal with goalkeeper.
The midfielder starts out outside the penalty box line, with a number of balls.
Sequence
The midfielder tries to create shooting opportunities by playing combinations with the two forwards.
The midfielder can only shoot from inside the penalty box.
The attackers have various options for the attack, e.g. wall passes, overlapping, etc.
If the man-markers win the ball, they try to dribble out of the penalty box.
Objectives
Setting up shots with combination plays
Accurate shooting |
|

|
2. SHOOTING AFTER HIGH-SPEED DRIBBLING
Set up
The midfielder stands about 30 yards in front of a goal with goalkeeper, with a number of balls.
One defender stands outside the penalty box.
Two pass receivers stand to the defender's right and left.
Sequence
The midfielder dribbles at top speed toward the defender and tries to get past, enter the penalty box and shoot.
Alternatively, he can play a wall pass with one of the pass receivers.
Objectives
High-speed dribbling training
Getting past an opponent with a solo run or wall pass |
|

|
3. SETTING UP A SHOT WITH A HEADER
Set up
Three players take assigned positions in front of a goal with goalkeeper:
One player (or the coach) stands on a sideline with a number of balls.
One player (the attacking forward) stands inside the penalty box.
The midfielder stands outside the penalty box.
Sequence
The passer on the sideline kicks a long, high pass to the forward inside the penalty box.
The forward heads the ball back into the path of the midfielder, who is moving toward the goal.
Depending on the situation, the midfielder shoots either directly or after briefly controlling the ball.
Possible variations: high passes from various positions to the forward, or with an opponent for the forward.
Objectives
Fast, accurate shots set up by a header
Moving up to the front |

SF Coed League Needs Women |
|
Are you interested in playing full field 11-a-side coed soccer? The SFCRSL is looking for some dedicated WOMEN players to join our league this season. The SFCRSL (San Francisco Coed Recreational Soccer League) is a fun, recreational league that has been playing in San Francisco for almost 30 years. Teams are split into 2 divisions, which are roughly "competitive" and "intermediate". Games are a full 90 minutes, with full size goals, uniforms, and sanctioned referees etc. We use FIFA rules, with 3 exceptions: (1) 5-touch limit to ensure everyone stays involved in the game and not just a couple of superstars, (2) women take all penalty kicks, and (3) no slide tackles allowed. The age range in the league is early 20s to somewhere in the early 50s (approx.) with the bulk of the players in the mid-20s to mid-30s. In addition to the games, we plan a number of social events for players in the league, including trips to major soccer games in the Bay Area, as well as league parties each season.
Spaces are available IMMEDIATELY for the current season. All games this season are in Golden Gate Park on Sundays through the end of December 2004 and are either at 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm, depending on the week and the team you're on. Most teams looking for players are willing to negotiate substantial discounts, if not provide free team membership, on their teams to ensure they get enough women on their teams. Please act quickly if you're interested as there's typically a week turnaround period to get new players registered.
Questions? Interested? Please contact Stuart Berman at president@sfcrsl.org or post in the "Players Looking For Teams" Forum on the SFCRSL website ( www.SFCRSL.org ).
For those men who are interested, there are no teams at the moment with openings for men, but you are welcome to post in the above forum and you may be contacted for the Spring season.
Please feel free to forward this to any women you know who might be interested in joining the league!
Thanks!
Stuart Berman

English Boy’s Team Looking For Hosts and Opponents |
|
Dear Coach,
I am acting as the agent for Leeds Grammar School from England.Although I work out of Canada out company handles many tours for U.K. based teams.
Leeds Grammar School is visiting California next July, and has expressed an interest in visiting San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, Fullerton and San Diego.
They are looking to be housed in as manyplaces as possible to help with their costs. They are also bringing a supporters group who will stay in Hotels.
Part of their itinerary has been completed. Hosting has been arranged in Fullerton for July 13th, 14th and 15th and they are participating in the Albion Cup in San Diego on the 16th and 17th.
I am looking for clubs in San Francisco, Santa Rosa and Sacramento that may be interested in hosting this team.
The dates are as follows:
San Francisco: July 4th , 5th and 6th. Game preferred on 6th
Sacramento : July 7th, 8th and 9th. Game preferred on 9th
Santa Rosa : July 10th, 11th and 12th. Game preferred on 12th.
During their time at each location we arrange excursions so that they do not inconvenience their hosts. Normally they would be with their hosts for breakfast and possibly some dinners.
The group has approximately 29 people in the group, including their coaches. The boys are aged U18. The coaches will take hotel accommodation.
I would appreciate your club considering this request and letting me know if you have an interest in hosting and playing Leeds grammar school.
Kind Regards,
Ken Jones
