The Game of Their Lives Moves to Theaters |
|

Story of 1950 U.S. World Cup Team opens in select
cities April 22
Based on the true story of the 1950 U.S. National
Team, The Game of Their Lives follows the “Miracle
on Turf” saga that includes ties to some of the
fabled names in NSCAA history. Directed by David
Anspaugh with a screenplay by Angelo Pizzo (the
filmmaking tandem that created Hoosiers and Rudy),
the film opens in select cities on April 22.
It brings to life the legendary story of the
underdog U.S. team that was pulled together and,
with only 10 days of preparation under the
direction of NSCAA Hall of Famer Bill Jeffrey,
took on the best teams on the planet in the 1950
World Cup. Among the players on the squad were
future NSCAA Hall of Fame coaches Walter Bahr
(Penn State) and Harry Keough (Saint Louis). The
team overcame tremendous obstacles to shock the
world with a 1-0 victory over England.
Those who attended the 2004 NSCAA Convention in
Charlotte, N.C., always will remember the thrill
created by the presence of the “Fabled Five,” the
remaining members of the 1950 team who were
presented Honorary All-America recognition. Bahr
and Keough were joined by Frank Borghi, Gino
Pariani and John “Clarkie” Souza, all receiving
thunderous ovations at the Friday night Awards
Banquet and the Saturday All-America Luncheon.
The stellar cast includes John Rhys-Davies (the
Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Lord of the Rings
trilogies), who portrays Jeffrey, the former Penn
State coach in whose honor the NSCAA's collegiate
long-term service award is named. He is joined by
Patrick Stewart ("Star Trek: The Next Generation,"
X-Men, Conspiracy Theory), Gerard Butler (The
Phantom of the Opera), Wes Bentley (American
Beauty), Gavin Rossdale (lead singer of the band
"Bush") and Zachary Bryan ("Home Improvement").
Also appearning in the film are famous current and
former players like Freddy Adu, Landon Donovan and
John Harkes.

(Part 2 of 3) |
|
By Klaus Pabst, German Staff Coach

1. DRIBBLING
AND PASSING I

Set Up
• Using four cones, mark
out a 10 x 12-yard field.
• Place another cone in the center of each
endline.
• Station one player at each center cone;
the remaining players form two lines, one at
each slalom course.
Sequence
• In this exercise, the corner cones are
unoccupied.
• The following technique exercise runs
simultaneously on both sides: The first
player in the group dribbles through the
slalom course and passes diagonally from the
last cone back to the player on the endline.
This player passes the ball to the next
player in line, etc.
• All players follow their passes to their
next positions.
Focus On
• Practicing dribbling
• Accurate passes over short distances
• Combining dribbling and passing as the
situation requires
2. DRIBBLING AND PASSING II

Set Up
• Setup is the same as Exercise 1.
Sequence
• Players dribble through the slalom
and pass diagonally back to the endline.
• The player on the endline passes
diagonally forwards to the cone at the far
end of the near sideline.
• All players follow their passes to their
next positions.
Focus On
• Practicing dribbling
• Accurate passes over short and long
distances
• Combining dribbling and passing as the
situation requires
3. DRIBBLING
AND PASSING III

Set Up
• Setup is the same as Exercise 1.
Sequence
• Like Exercise 2, except now, after
the second diagonal pass, the player at the
corner cone kicks a square pass along the
endline (to the other group).
• As above, all players follow their passes
to their next positions.
Focus On
• Practicing dribbling
• Accurate passes over short and long
distances
• Combining dribbling and passing as the

Brazilian Youth Soccer Coach |
|
Hi.
My Name is Rinaldo Pereira
DOB: 05-29-66
Sex: M
Hair: Blk
HT: 5-9
I’m From Brasil.
I have a coaching license.
California Youth Soccer Association
CYSA “F” Licensed Certified Coach
I grew up in Goiania. I’ve played futebol (soccer)
since I was five years old. All Brasilian kids grow
up learning soccer skills in the street, and really
learn how to move their bodies so they can move the
ball. I want to teach American children these same
skills.
As a teen I began Taekwon do. I earned my Black belt
and began teaching in Goiania and then Ribeirao
Preto, Interior de Sao Paulo while I attended UNARP
(University of Ribeirao Preto) majoring in Physical
Education. My university education was cut short by
political unrest and my scholarship was cut off.
Here in the U.S. I have been a volunteer tutor at
Marshall Elementary School in San Francisco’s
mission district all year long.
Soccer is still my favorite sport.

2005 Summer Trip to Europe |
|
|
We are
inviting current U-13, 14 and U-17, 18 players to
play in Osnabruck, Germany this summer. Osnabruck
won the Regionaliga championship last year. Osnabruck
is in Northern Germany, close to Düsseldorf and
Amsterdam.
The
German U-17 team is here.
They are staying with us until the 28th,
and then they move on to Sacramento.
We will
do a home stay with the players from Germany, which
means we will take a couple of players into our
homes this Spring, and give them a taste of American
family life. We will schedule games between our
local teams and the German boys.
On July 15th
through the 30th,
we will travel to Germany and stay with them. We
will train and play at their club, and learn first
hand what it takes to be a professional soccer
player. They will arrange friendlies with the
surrounding club teams during our stay.
We will
also do a second tournament with the younger team
while in Europe, and will notify everyone shortly
regarding this tournament. This will occur the first
week of August.
We are
estimating the cost to be around $1,600.00 for the
older players, and $2,100.00 for the younger players
who will be doing a European tournament after
Germany. We are dedicated to help players raise this
money through raffles and sponsorships. Last summer
we raised enough money for two scholarship players,
and other players raised enough to offset their
costs substantially.
We took a
U-13 team to the Gothia Cup and the Holland Cup, and
we won 1st place in the 2nd
Division of the Holland Cup. It was one of the
greatest soccer experience of the boys lives, and
this summer, will be even better. What an
opportunity, to work with a top team in Germany at
their training facility.
Shani
Simpson will coach the younger team. (U-14’s)
Tom
Simpson will coach the older team. (U-17 / 18 mix)
Both Tom
and Shani have a lot of experience with these
European trips, having participated in tournaments
all over the world.
Training
will begin after Sate Cup competition is finished,
which means March 1st for the U-13, 14’s,
and any available
U-17 / 18
players.

SOCCER CLINICS TIME!!! with Coach Gianni |
|
|
It's
time to think about BECOMING better soccer players
instead of just playing.
At coachgianni.com, many times I've underlined that
everyone can paint but this doesn't mean they are
painters! They just paint. So, everyone can play
soccer, but this doesn't mean they ARE soccer
players.
A soccer player is someone who can juggle, pass,
trap, shoot, etc., etc., (with both feet) and
constantly improves his or her level of basic soccer
skill. Being a soccer player is not a point of
arrival but a journey that lasts your whole soccer
career.
SOCCER LESSONS AND CLINICS
Starting May 16th to May 27, from 3 to 6 pm
and from May 30th to August 21 from 9am to 6pm
I'm offering 3 choices:
INDIVIDUAL LESSONS (1 hr)
cost $70 per student
GROUP LESSONS (1 hr)
If you put together a group, it will be $60 each for
2 students, $50 for 3 and $40 for 4/6.
CLINICS (5 hrs from 9am to 2pm)
cost $200 each player, for a group of 4 to 6 players
We will work on fundamentals, personal strategy,
fitness, 'Gianni's tricks'! and finish with a game
2v2 or 3v3.
Please bring sun screen, beverage and food (please
don't swallow them in that order)
LOCATIONS (what ever is good for
you)
Beach Chalet (outside the fence to the left) Golden
Gate Park
Sharon Meadow - Golden Gate Park
Laurel Hill Playground (corner of Euclid and Laurel)
J. K. Park - Presidio
Please email
giannimininni@yahoo.com
to set lessons.
I'll end by reminding everyone that there's a new
quotation at
coachgianni.com
that's:
To Be The Best, You Have To Beat The Best.
I hope all the players and in particular the young
ones, will read my comments.
Chapter 4 of the novel,
"The Team",
talks about coach Marco and his relationship to
American sports.
Sincerely,
Coach Gianni
