Volunteer Coaches Needed

Jamestown Community Center is looking for volunteer coaches for our girls and boys soccer, baseball and softball teams this summer and fall.

Im sending this to you in hopes that you may know someone (or yourself, of course) who may be looking for an amazing experience to change their life…

The time commitment ranges from 4-6 hours a week, and they will receive training for coaching and behavior management. All of our teams play in recreational leagues so they don’t have to be a professional athlete to teach the basics. They just need to enjoy playing with kids and being a role model.

I am currently looking for coaches and assistant coaches for the following teams:

Summer opportunities

Boys Soccer:  Season starts June 18th to August 20th.

Under-8 team practices once a week and the games are Saturdays. The coach can decide what day to hold practice and at what time.

Under-10 team needs an assistant coach. They practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-7:00 and the games are on Saturdays. The practice times can be flexible depending on the coaches schedule.

Girls Softball:

The softball team (girls ages 12-15) starts in July and has practice one day a week and the games are usually on Tuesdays at 3:30.

Boys Baseball:

We have 3 teams for ages 8-16. The season is throughout the summer and they practice one day a week and the games for the younger boys are at 3:30 while the teen games start at 5:00. The game days can be decided by the coach, but are usually either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. We are looking for assistant coaches for either one of the three teams.

Fall Opportunities

Girls SoccerSeason starts September 10th and ends in November.

Under-8: They can start practice as early as 4:00 if needed and the games are on Saturdays.

Under-10: They will practice 1-2 times a week and the games are on Saturdays.

Boys Soccer:

Our boys teams also play in the fall. There may be a need for an assistant and/or head coaches.

Please help me spread the word. If you or any interested folks have any questions or leads please have them call me at Jamestown.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Deirdre Murphy

Coaching Corner: Angle Passing

By Jeff Tipping, NSCAA Director of Coaching Education
(from the NSCAA Coaching Newsletter - June 1st, 2005)

One of the classic features of Brazilian soccer is angle passing. Watching many Brazilian teams play resembles zigzag soccer. One of the passes that we discourage is a straight pass to a straight run vertically down the field. If a central midfield player is checking straight to the ball, which is being passed by a central defender straight down the middle of the field, the midfield player has no idea where the defender is and frequently only has one passing option - which is to pass the ball back to the defender. If on the other hand, the ball is passed at an angle from the fullback to the midfield player, a number of important technical and tactical options are available to both players.

Soccer has been called a sideways on sport and that image is exemplified in Brazilian soccer. When players receive the ball on an angle pass, they are already halfway turned hence are able to see the opponent as well as the ball. Being half way turned also enables the player receiving the ball to either play a double pass with a deep support player, a one-two pass with a player in advance of the ball or a receive the ball and face up against the defender and to dribble and beat the defender.

Being at an angle to the ball also enables the midfield player to read the distance to the defender. If the defender is too tight the pass can be made behind the defender. If the defender is too loose, the ball can be passed to feet.

Straight Pass

Angle

Pass
Behind

A great exercise for teaching angle passes and receiving the ball sideways on is a vertical zone exercise. In this 6v6 game the field is divided into three vertical zones with two players from each team in each zone. There is a goal at the end of each zone and each player is restricted to his/her zone. When passing the ball forward, a player cannot pass the ball straight ahead in his/her own zone. When the ball goes forward it must be passed into a different zone, however the ball may be passed straight back in the same zone. Players are allowed to move anywhere inside their own zone and this kind of passing movement sets up a series of zigzag passing, which is the preferred kind of passing in Brazil.
St. Ignatius Boy’s Teams Looking for Coaches

Because of various factors the Cats will be in need of a couple of coaches next season. Both positions would be with the Freshmen or Sophomore team.  The lower levels begin practice on November 1 and go until the end of January or early February and practices and games will keep you busy six days a week.   These would also be paid positions.  Please let us know if you would be interested i being part of the SI Coaching Staff for 2005-2006. -js

Coaching Corner: Zonal Defending - The key is to focus on the ball

By Bobby Clark, University of Notre Dame - Honorary NSCAA Staff Coach (from the NSCAA Coaching Newsletter - June 8th, 2004)

Warm Up
  1. Pairs pass the ball approximately five yards apart, alternating feet.
  2. Players in pairs moving between a network of balls. The lead players perform a series of movements which their partner imitates (knees up, sideways running, etc).
  3. One partner from the pair stretches and the other dribbles around and nutmegs the stretching partner. On the whistle, the dribbling player must dribble quickly back to partner. Last one back does two push-ups.
  4. Two players chest passing. They must look directly into their partner's eyes. First player intermittently throws ball in a loop.
Coaching Point: Receiving player must move feet to be able to see the ball and the player (must see two things at once).
  5. Partners pass the ball 10 yards apart. Intermittently one of the players traps the ball with the sole of the foot. Partner must sprint forward to touch ball with his/her foot and quickly back pedal to original position.

Coaching Point: Players must read their partner's body language & anticipate when the ball will be trapped. “React before it happens”.

Activity 1

Players 1 & 2 pass ball back and forth. As they do, Player 3, the attacker, moves around the grid. Player 4, the defender, shadows 3. Initially 1 & 2 are instructed not to pass the ball in.

Coaching Point: Player 4 must move with player 3 so that player 4 can see the ball and keep player 3 in view at the same time. Player 4 moves feet constantly anticipating pass into 3's feet.

Progression: "Focus on the ball—not the man.”
Same exercise as above, except 1 & 2 are instructed to play ball into 3 intermittently. 4 now must be prepared to step up and intercept pass.

Coaching Points: Defender must anticipate the pass before it happens by reading the passer's body language. Defender must decide:

  1. Can I intercept the ball before the attacker receives it gets it?
    If not…
  2. Can I steal ball the off the attacker's first touch?
    If not…
  3. Can I force the opponent to play it backwards?
    If player turns with ball…
  4. Can I make the attacker's play predictable?

The defender has to constantly read the visual cue of whether the attacker can receive a pass over the top. Defender must read the body language of the serving player to see if he/she will play ball into feet or over top into space.

Note: If the defender intercepts the pass in, he/she plays the ball back to the servers. The attacker's goal is to dribble over the line.  Offside is introduced.

Activity 2 - Introduce a 2nd Defender

Same exercise except two defenders must read the ball and decide who will step for the interception.

Coaching Points:

  1. Defenders both read visual cues of the passing players.
  2. One defender goes to intercept the ball while the other drops to give cover. As the attacker moves laterally, defenders switch - “verbal communication”

Progression: The player who passes the ball in can follow the ball into the into grid to make it a 2v2.

Activity 3

Back 4 responds to movement of ball and reads if ball is to be passed. Back 4 drops off or pushes up.  (See Diagram 2)

Progressions:

  1. A center forward is introduced. Back 4 responds to movement of ball and CF.
  2. Second CF added plus 2 wide players. Coach plays ball to CF or 2 wide players.

Coaching Points:

  • One center back must determine when to drop and when to push up. When to hold offside line.
  • If the ball goes wide, outside backs pressure the ball to force inside.  The ball should be forced inside because the two center backs get pulled away from center of the field too much if the ball goes down the touchline. This is an important point for coaches who debate whether to force ball in or out.
  • Two CMF players are added. One of whom can penetrate with the ball.  A goalkeeper is added for the defending team to counter to.  (See Diagram 3)

Brazilian Youth Soccer Coach
Hi.
My Name is Rinaldo Pereira

DOB: 05-29-66
Sex: M
Hair: Blk
HT: 5-9

I'm From Brasil.
I have a coaching license.
California Youth Soccer Association
CYSA “F” Licensed Certified Coach

I grew up in Goiania. I've played futebol (soccer) since I was five years old. All Brasilian kids grow up learning soccer skills in the street, and really learn how to move their bodies so they can move the ball.  I want to teach American children these same skills.

As a teen I began Taekwon do. I earned my Black belt and began teaching in Goiania and then  Ribeirao Preto, Interior de Sao Paulo while I attended UNARP (University of Ribeirao Preto) majoring in Physical Education. My university education was cut short by political unrest and my scholarship was cut off.

Here in the U.S. I have been a volunteer tutor at Marshall Elementary School in San Francisco's mission district all year long.

Soccer is still my favorite sport.

However, to be fair to, upper division teams won't be allowed to play in the rec bracket. If you're unsure about where your team should go, write me.

OVER 35's: If we can get five or six Over-35 teams, we should be able to create a bracket for you. The tournament is open to the other two women's leagues in N. ROSTER SIZE: There's a max of 14 on the roster, but you can have less if you want.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS: If your team is not going to field a team but some people want to play in the tourney, they can play on another team. I'll set up a page on the site for teams to advertise if they need players.
