Marin Soccer Facility Needs Your Support |
|
| Dear Soccer Friends,
The final Design Review meeting has been set for the
proposed indoor/outdoor soccer facility in San Rafael.
The City of San Rafael likes the project, but will not
approve it unless we can show our support in numbers
at this meeting. We need EVERY soccer mom, dad, kid,
fan, player, coach, parent, referee, grandma, grandpa,
and anyone else that loves soccer to come to this
meeting. So please bring your family and friends!
Time: 7pm (please arrive early)
Date: November 8th (voting day)
Location: San Rafael City Hall between Mission and
Fifth street.
Plan to get there twenty minutes early so we can pack
the auditorium with our supporters. We are expecting a
lot of the people against the project (eg. the
neighbors from the mobile home park, Contempo Marin,
and the people living on Vendola in Santa Venetia) to
attend. It is vital that we outnumber their supporters
two to one for our project to move ahead.
The meeting is on election day, so hopefully you can
get your voting done and still make it to the meeting
by 6:45. We have 10-15 people representing various
soccer clubs and organizations who are slated to speak
at the end of the meeting. It is an open forum so if
you are interested in speaking, please step up and do
so.
I cannot say enough about how important it is for all
of you to be there. Please don't think "they won't
miss me, one person" because we will. Your presence
will definitely make a difference.
If you are going to make it, please reply to let me
know how many people (including yourself) will be
attending. It is important for us to know about how
many people we are going to have supporting us at this
meeting.
Keep thinking about how great it will be to have a
full indoor/outdoor soccer facility for kids and
families to enjoy year round. A place to go play,
train, shower, watch games, have meetings/birthday
parties and enjoy something to eat with family and
friends.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this
project please contact me via email or telephone (see
below).
Thanks again for all your support!

U.S. SOCCER ANNOUNCES GOALKEEPING LICENSE FOR COACHES |
|
From the U.S. Soccer Communications Center:
As part of our continuing effort to service and educate our membership, U.S. Soccer Communications Center will send out informative articles from one of its departments. As part of our Resource Center, you will receive an article/paper/essay in your inbox that will hopefully enhance your enjoyment and knowledge of the game of soccer - on and off the field.
This article talks about a newly created Goalkeeping License for coaches.
U.S. SOCCER ANNOUNCES GOALKEEPING LICENSE FOR COACHES
Chicago, Ill. (Thursday, October 20, 2005) - While the U.S. has successful goalkeepers at international and top club levels around the world, there is still more work to be done developing the talent at this position. With this in mind, U.S. Soccer is looking to further develop the Goalkeeping position and coach. This inaugural course will act as a foundation for what plans to be the first in a series of educational opportunities offered.
The inaugural school will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. from January 5 – 10, 2006. Space is limited and the course if filling up quickly so act soon by applying at the Coaches section of ussoccer.com .
The U.S. Soccer National Goalkeeper License is intended for both the goalkeeper coach and the team coach. This initial license will develop and or expand their goalkeeping knowledge useful at the youth, collegiate, senior and professional levels. It will cover the principles and the components that go into developing goalkeepers, and it will encourage the team coach to prepare and plan for the goalkeepers development needs - not just daily - but over an entire season.
“The U.S. has produced some world-class goalkeepers and, with this license and future courses to be added, we hope to develop many more,” said U.S. Men's National Team Goalkeeper coach and lead instructor for this inaugural course Phil Wheddon.
The course will instruct coaches on how to plan and manage their goalkeeper's development over the course of an entire season. It features in-depth coverage of the technical, tactical, psychological and fitness components of the goalkeeper position. Similar to other U.S. Soccer Coaching Courses, this course will offer an interactive learning experience featuring field sessions, audio and video and traditional lectures.
Designed as a compliment to the U.S. Soccer “A”, “B” & “C” License courses, the six-day school includes field and classroom sessions and concludes with intensive testing on theoretical and practical applications of the game. The course also includes valuable instruction in coaching methodology, team management and fitness.
For the inaugural Goalkeeping License applicants must hold the following pre-requisites:
1. USSF “A” License or,
2. NSCAA Premier Diploma or,
3. USSF “B” License or,
4. NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a Goalkeeper Level I Diploma or,
5. USSF “C” License or,
6. NSCAA National Diploma and a Goalkeeper Level II Diploma.
As the Goalkeeping License develops, U.S. Soccer may revisit the pre-requisites required to attend.
Upon successful completion (passing grade) of the U.S. Soccer Goalkeeping License, attendees to this school with an “A“ License will receive eight Continuing Education credits - the entire compliment needed to keep their license current.
For more information, please contact the U.S. Soccer Coaching Department at coaches@ussoccer.org or 312.808.1300.

| from the National Soccer Coaches of America www.nscaa.com
Match Analysis
DEFENDING
- Where is the line of confrontation? High or Low
- What is the depth of the compactness and width of concentration?
- Zonal of Man-To-Man? Or a combination?
- Do they steer or confront?
- How many do they commit to defend?
ATTACKING
- How is width created?
- Do they play in the front of the opposing backs (indirect) or behind the backs (direct)?
- Do they change the point of attack? How?
- How are chances created? (Individual dribbling, early crosses, goal line crosses, combinations)?
- How many players do they commit to the attack?

| Coaching Corner: 3v2 Attacking Play (Part 1) |
|
|
By Hylton Dayes, NSCAA Academy Staff
Teaching players how to effectively attack when there is a numbers up situation (3v2) using combinations and tactical cues.
Attacking Objectives
* Numerical superiority means to go with speed at defenders
* Player with ball attacks 1st defender and plays him/her out of the game
* Becomes 2v1 with last defender
Tactical Cues
* Can 1st attacker find 3rd attacker with long pass?
* If pressured can 1st attacker combine with 2nd attacker to eliminate 1st defender
2nd Attacker
(i) Does 1st attacker need support – where?
(ii) Where can I best position myself to exploit 2v1 advantage?
(iii) Can I support 3rd attacker if played to him/her?
3rd Attacker
(i) Can 3rd attacker get behind the defense?
(ii) When does 3rd attacker make check run and come back for support?
Exercise I
Warm up - 2 Groups of 6 players in 20x30 grids, passing and moving creating short and long support, width and depth.

| Coaching Corner: Combination Play |
|
|
By Vince Ganzberg, Regional Technical Director
Coaching Points: Techniques of wall pass, takeover, overlap, Recognition of when to support and when to run into space, creating good support angles, acceleration after combination, eye contact, verbal and non-verbal communication.
Coaching Topics: Combination play out of the back, Combination play in the middle third, Combination play in the attacking third |
Warm-up
Partner Passing - Players are in pairs with one ball. At first instruct the pairs to dribble, pass, and move with each other. For Drill animation, CLICK HERE . 2) Whoever passes the ball runs around an outside cone. The receiver then dribbles away, lifts head up (eye contact) and passes to the player who is returning from their trip around the cones. Then the person who passed the ball runs around the cone and it is repeated. For Drill animation, CLICK HERE . 3) Same as two except now the two players perform a wall pass. For Drill animation, CLICK HERE .
|
Match Related
Partner Pass Tag - Players get with their partners and a ball. One or two pairs don't have a ball and hold a penny between them. They are “it” and must stay together holding the penny. The rest of the pairs have one ball and are trying to stay away from the players that are “it”. The players that are “it” are instructed to try and tag anyone who does not have a ball. If a player gets tagged then they are now “it” along with their partner. The “it” players take their ball and the activity continues. For Drill animation, CLICK HERE .
Wall Pass Game - Divide the team into half. Give each half around 3 balls. When the activity starts they try and wall pass around someone from the other team. When that happens, they get a point. The person who was wall passed around, goes out, does a fun-little forfeit and goes back in. |

|
2v1, but in 2's - Players are in two's and play to small (6 steps) goals against another pair in an area of about 25 long by 15 wide. Whoever is on attack must always have two players, whoever is defending can only defend with one, while the other player has to go back in goal and may not use their hands to keep the ball out. For Drill animation, CLICK HERE .
|
Match Condition
4v4 - Look for combination possibilities and reward combinations with an extra point. Then after a bit, play normally.

| U.S. SOCCER INTRODUCES FITNESS LEVEL 1 LICENSE FOR COACHES
Course Developed by U.S. MNT Strength & Conditioning Coach Pierre Barrieu;
Debuts With Inaugural Session on January 13 at The Home Depot Center
CHICAGO, Ill. (October 25, 2005) - As part of U.S. Soccer's goal to increase educational opportunities available for coaches, U.S. Soccer is introducing the Fitness Level 1 License. This three-day residential course focuses on educating and training coaches in the skills and practices required to deliver a safe and effective soccer specific fitness program for teams and individuals of all ages, with an emphasis on youth soccer players.
The new course has been developed by U.S. Men's National Team Strength and Conditioning Coach Pierre Barrieu and will instruct coaches on how to plan and deliver conditional programs to suit individuals and teams of all ages. The program also seeks to reach coaches interested in improving the fitness programs of their teams at all levels.
The inaugural session of the Fitness Level 1 License course will debut from January 13-15, 2006, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
"With the increased emphasis on fitness over the last 20 years, this course fills a gap in the coaching curriculum," said Barrieu. "It is important that coaches learn the fundamentals of modern fitness training, and understand how to integrate fitness into their tactical training while developing a long-term plan. This license will be a valuable tool for any coach who aspires to reach the highest levels."
The U.S. Soccer Fitness Level 1 License was developed for coaches interested in specializing or simply improving their soccer fitness training knowledge. Coaches will further their understanding of the physical, physiological and nutritional needs and demands of soccer in relation to a player's daily lifestyle, training and requirements for competitive games. The course also includes valuable instruction in identifying individual player's physical strengths and weaknesses
Designed as a complement to the U.S. Soccer “A” and “B” License courses, the three-day school includes field and classroom sessions and concludes with testing on theoretical applications of fitness training programs and nutritional plans.
Applicants must hold the following prerequisites to apply:
1. Minimum of US Soccer National “B” License or,
2. A Sports Science Degree or,
3. Relevant degree, qualification and/or experience in subjects as approved by U.S. Soccer.
Upon successful completion, "A" License coaches will receive 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for attendance at the three-day course. Limited space is available for this inaugural course.
Coaches may apply directly online at ussoccer.com. For more information, please contact the U.S. Soccer Coaching Department at (312) 528-1219 or http://us.f807.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=coaches@ussoccer.org .
