Barbara Elliott Tournament

Sunday January 1, 2006 (New Year's Day)
Sponsored by the GGWSL & Sunset Soccer Supply

"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."--Sir Isaac Newton.

Newton's famous sentiment pays homage to the people that have gone before him and made his own experiences possible. It is in this spirit that I am proud to announce a tournament to honor a "giant" in the world of women's soccer, Barbara Elliott.

Barbara has been a part of the Golden Gate Women's Soccer League since 1985. She is currently Member-at-Large, in charge of the

Over-35's program and GGWSL representative to CSA-N. Recently Barbara fulfilled her personal dream of creating an Over 35 division

in the League. Prior to this, she was the League Secretary for over 10 years. She played in the League from 1984-2000, when she "retired" from league competition and focused on her tournament play with an over-50's team. In 1999 she returned and played in the Over 35's for Forte, one of the inaugural teams. Her playing has been temporarily stopped by kidney failure requiring daily dialysis, recent bi-lateral Achilles tendon ruptures and peritonitis but her enthusiasm for soccer continues.

Over the years, Barb has worked tirelessly to help make the Golden Gate Women's Soccer League what it is today- growing from the original 7 teams to the current 52 teams. She was the contact for new players to find a team.

She has made women's soccer in San Francisco grow from a struggling sport to the vigorous and viable sport it is today.

Barbara is one of the pioneers and every woman soccer player in San Francisco is indebted to her. She laid the foundation that has borne opportunities in women's soccer that are available today.

For many years Barbara has battled Lupus. About four and a half years ago, Barbara lost one of those fights and her kidneys failed. Now, for 10 hours a day, she undergoes dialysis, and is currently on a waiting list for a kidney donation. This has left her unable to work, and needless to say times are difficult. Although for anyone that knows Barbara, they won't be surprised to hear that she is still as cheery as ever.

Here's how you can help:

Play in the Barbara Elliott mixer tournament.

On Sunday January 1 (New Year's Day) at 11:00 am

West Sunset Soccer Fields (now Jim Lucey Fields) 39 th Ave. and Quintara St.

Play 11 v 11 pick-up games from 11am to 1pm. This tournament is coed, but if demand is such, some women's or men's only games will be setup. I will also make a special kid's only game if needed.

Have fun for a great cause.

Cost: $20 or whatever you can afford (pay to GGWSL/Barbara Elliott). Playing equipment (balls & vests) provided by Sunset Soccer

All participants will be entered in a drawing for a FREE pair of soccer shoes of your choice from Sunset Soccer. Call Toby at 415-846-6446 for more information.

RAINOUT NUMBER: 415-846-6446

If you can't make it to the mixer, but still wish to donate, please make a check out to Barbara Elliott and mail it to:

U.S. MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM TO TAKE ON NORWAY ON JANUARY 29, 2006, AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER IN CARSON, CA
MNT FACE NORWAY IN JANUARY: The U.S. Men's National Team will face Norway at The Home Depot Center on January 29, 2006, at 2 p.m. PT, as U.S. Manager Bruce Arena continues to shape and prepare his team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The match will be televised live on ESPN2 and available online via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker. The match will be part of an extended training camp for the U.S. that will be held at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., beginning on Jan. 4 to kick off the World Cup year. Tickets begin at $20 and are available at ussoccer.com, all Southern California Ticketmaster ticket centers (including Robinson's-May, Wherehouse Music and Tower Records), The Home Depot Center ticket office (stadium ticket office is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m), and by phone at (213) 480-3232.  Groups of 15 or more can purchase discounted tickets starting at $18 by calling U.S. Soccer at 312-528-1290 or downloading a group order form at ussoccer.com. The Jan. 29 fixture will be the ninth game played by a U.S. Soccer team in the main stadium at The Home Depot Center since it opened more than two years ago. This will be the second visit by the U.S. Men's National Team to the HDC, following a 1-1 draw with Denmark in January of 2004. The U.S. Women have won four times at Home Depot Center, and the U.S. U-20 Men's National team swept their three world championship qualifying matches there in January of 2005. This will be the 67th match for the U.S. MNT in Southern California, where the team has a 27-19-20 record dating back to 1957.
Coaching Corner: 3v2 Attacking Play (Part 3 of 3)

By Hylton Dayes, NSCAA Academy Staff

Teaching players how to effectively attack when there is a numbers up situation (3v2) using combinations and tactical cues.

Attacking Objectives
* Numerical superiority means to go with speed at defenders
* Player with ball attacks 1st defender and plays him/her out of the game
* Becomes 2v1 with last defender

Tactical Cues
* Can 1st attacker find 3rd attacker with long pass?
* If pressured can 1st attacker combine with 2nd attacker to eliminate 1st defender

2nd Attacker
  (i) Does 1st attacker need support – where?
(ii) Where can I best position myself to exploit 2v1 advantage?
(iii) Can I support 3rd attacker if played to him/her?

3rd Attacker
  (i) Can 3rd attacker get behind the defense?
(ii) When does 3rd attacker make check run and come back for support?

Exercise III
Directional - 3v3 to small goals (30x20 grid). 1 defender becomes GK to create 3v2 situations.
