Toby:

A very happy new year to you, Libby, Pierre and the folks at Sunset Soccer Supply. It’s great to know that the reliable 3 S's have been around for so long to furnish all our football needs.

I would like to share this story with you and your readers.

I was reffing a U-9 boys' match in Menlo Park. You know how parents get over-zealous. There was this mom who wouldn't stop yelling at her own son everytime he had the ball. It was worse when he lost control of the ball. It was obvious why he lost control with all the noise from his mum.

I stopped the game and when there was a throw in, and went over to her and asked whether she would make an arse of herself if her son had forgotten his lines during a school play. Obviously, taken aback she muttered, "How dare you?" I followed with a second question. I asked her if her son was a kitty cat. Perplexed she asked "What?" I told her that her son had only one childhood and it was her duty to let him enjoy it.

My points must have sunk in as she never uttered another word, except to cheer, after that. I know that it’s not easy to not shout at football games; after all the beautiful game is a game of passion. But as parents we have to support our kids whether they are having a good game, bad game, or warming the bench.

Cheers,

Kalwant Sandhu, MBA

Golden Gate Women's Division 3 team seeks a coach for the Spring Season
Golden Gate Women's Division 3 team seeks a coach for the Spring Season. We hope to start practice in the next couple of weeks and our first game is in March. We practice Wednesday nights and have games on Saturdays. We're a nice team and are willing to work hard and commit to improving our skills. We would like to find a coach who can help us at practice and make most of our games. It is a volunteer position but we'd be willing to pay for basic related expenses. We already have a lot of equipment. Please call or email Tara at 415 254-4268 or Tzoro@juno.com. Our team name is Wakiza and you can see us on the GGWSL.ORG site. Thanks.
MARIN SOCCER LEAGUE MEN’S CLUB SEEKS NEW PLAYERS

MARIN SOCCER LEAGUE MEN’S CLUB SEEKS NEW PLAYERS

PIKERS FC is an ambitious soccer club that plays in the Marin Soccer League in San Rafael on Saturdays during the summer season (Apr-Oct).  We are looking to add experienced players as we expand the club to two teams; Div. A & Div. B.

Our focus is to find quality players who can come into the squad and add depth in all areas.  The standard, particularly in Div. A, is pretty high so you need to have played at a reasonable level.

We have a good mix of European and North American players who mostly live in the city. We play hard and like to socialize after games as well.  Playing in Marin is nice because of the better field & weather conditions; it's great to get out of the city, escape the fog and enjoy the sun.  We can also help with rides to/from games if that is a concern.

The season starts April 1st.  We are holding casual training games on Saturday mornings in Golden Gate Park and will also hold more formal trials and friendlies in Feb & Mar.

We are interested in all positions, but a solid keeper and centre midfield player are essential for us this year.

New Sport4Good League
New league is starting up at Gellert Park, on Mar 4. The league is geared towards individual players but teams are welcome to sign up. Games will be 8v8 with minimum of 2 women. Because the bulk of the players are coming from SF and we have more field time to work with, games will be 35 min. halves. Fields are half pitch and we play with goals that are a bit smaller than the 8X24 goals. I'm personally pretty excited with this league because it'll give a lot of players who can't seem to find a team to hop on during the week or weekends a place to play. All games are on turf and you can wear normal molded cleats on it. Level is intermediate and if enough teams form, level will be split up between lower and upper intermediate. Field is about a 1/2 mi off of Hwy 280 (Hickory Blvd Exit). For all those that don't have a car, we can try to set up a morning carpool or something. Sign up!
Coaching Corner - Attacking Exercises

By Paul Payne, NSCAA Academy Staff Coach

Coaching Points: These drills help players to make good decisions with the ball and attack quickly.

Exercise 1: What's On
Organization:
In an area from the top of the 18 to midfield, randomly place small goals with cones (5 yards wide) as as other small goals made with flags. Place them so they staggered throughout the area. Play 6v6 (can adjust size and numbers).

Phase 1:
Have each team with 2 balls passing back and forth among them. Have the players look to play passes through the flag goals while dribbling through the cone goals. Make sure the players are aware of what is on in that part of the field (pass or dribble).

Phase 2:
Play 6v6 with teams scoring by successfully passing through the flag goals and dribbling through the cone goals. Vision and communication is the key so that players recognize when to take space with the dribble or the pass.

Coach can place restrictions:

·  You can't go back through the same goal you just scored on;
·
You must alternate between the pass goal and the dribble goal.

Exercise 2: Box Game

Organization:
Use an 18-yard box (18 x 44). Place two 5-yard-square boxes at opposite ends of the penalty area approximately 30 yards apart. Play 4v4 (can adjust playing areas and numbers).

Phase 1:
Play 3v3 with a teammate acting as a target goal in the 5-yard box that you are facing. Look for quick combinations to find the target player. When the ball is played into the target player, they must one-touch it to a teammate to score a goal. When that happens, the target player sprints to the opposite box and their team then attacks in the other direction. The opposing target player must exchange boxes as well. Vision, passing and movement off the ball are the keys to being successful.

Phase 2:
The same set-up but when the ball is successfully played to the target and one-touched to a teammate, any field player from that team can fill the opposite box. The target player from the team not scoring must switch boxes by sprinting to the opposite box. This encourages teams to counter quickly and play forward safely. Teammates must be aware of who can fillthe box to take advantage of the counter. On the defensive side, immediate pressure is the key to deny the counter.

COACH GIANNI SOCCER ACADEMY

I’m very pleased to inform you that in MARCH, I will lead an intensive clinic (4 hours a day for 5 days) to permit the youth players to specifically develop aspects that are hard to develop during the usual team practice. During that time the team is focused on the game. To make an example, the coach is like the conductor of an orchestra and can’t take care of a violinist individually. My job is the opposite. I take care, ‘individually’, of every player, even in a class clinic, because the learning is based on INDIVIDUAL exercises.

Classes and Purpose

When we play a soccer game, in 90 minutes we touch and handle the ball for no more than 2 minutes. It's hard to learn something in 2 minutes. If this is valid for the field soccer players, it’s much more true for the keepers. A 4 hour class is the equivalent of more than an entire season! Multiply this by 5 days and you get the idea.

During the lessons, I will develop these topics:
Fundamentals

Field players: how to trap, pass, kick, juggle, cross, etc.
Keepers: receive the ball, low/high ball collection, cross, diving, distribution, punts, goal kicks, etc.

Fitness

Getting in shape and strengthening, ready to physically perform in a demanding sport like soccer.
Strategy

Besides a team strategy that will be developed at practice during the season, there is an individual discipline of what to do on the field to win the ball back in pressing, how to be in the right position at the right time, how to read the game and anticipate what happens (possibly before it happens) and be able to support our team-mates suggesting what to do, just by doing the right thing or going to the right place.

Particular exercises will be done to improve strength and agility through stretching and fitness. We'll develop one topic every session.

In short, you'll become A BETTER SOCCER PLAYER.
