SEEKING COACHING ASSISTANCE

I am the coach of the Foghorn Mistys, U-10 Girls for the Fall 2006 season. I am hoping to hire a coaching consultant to coach my players at practice once a week beginning late August through mid November of 2006 through the Viking League season. We practice on Tuesday afternoons that runs for 75 minutes. The coaching consultant should also attend and observe the team play at two Saturday matches in September and two more in October.

We are an average-skilled social team, with dedicated parents. We have been together since kindergarten and played three years in microsoccer (both fall and spring). We played for the first time in the Viking league in 2005 and will be playing PAL this spring season. We emphasize fun, fitness, teamwork and fair play. Winning is a desired by-product only through achieving the above goals.

Interested coaches should contact me to begin discussions.

Coaching Corner: Fun Games for Under 8s (Part 2)

By Lee Mitchell, NSCAA Region III Technical Director

Several of these games are "knock-out" games where the losers are knocked out and the last player left is the winner. Since the first ones out are often the ones who need the most practice, the ones knocked out should be required to do something to either get back into the game or to keep them working on their ball skills until the game is over.

Numbers
This exercise is good for 1v1 dribbling skills. It is especially good on a hot day as the defending players can rest a bit. Divide the players into two groups. Assign each player a number depending upon the number of players you have so that each group has a number one, number two and so on. Try to make sure that the kids with the same numbers are evenly matched.

Set up two very wide goals with pylons. Spread the kids on each side across each goal line. Call out one or more numbers, and those kids come out to play 1v1, 2v2, etc., and the rest of the players remain spread out across the goal line as defenders. Throw a ball from the sideline to the center and let them play until a goal is scored, the defenders stop it, or it goes out of bounds.

Variation: Colors. Use two each of different colored pinnies, armbands or stickers to place on shirts (as younger kids will have trouble remembering numbers).

Monkey In The Middle
All players form a circle and choose someone to be the Monkey to be in the center. The players forming the circle pass one ball among them while the person in the center tries to gain control of the ball. When this happens, the person in the circle who last touched the ball goes to the center. Some level of competitiveness develops but never on an individual basis and the "losers" quickly get a chance to redeem themselves.

Ice Monster
Mark off an area for the game to be played and select one player to be the Ice Monster. Have the rest of the players (each with a ball) dribble around within the area. The Ice Monster attempts to touch each player's ball, at which point that player "freezes" with their foot on the ball. If a player's ball goes out of bounds, they also freeze. The last remaining unfrozen player gets to be the new Ice Monster for the next round.

Pirate
Everybody gets inside a circle (the center circle is fine) with a ball. One player without a ball is the Pirate. Every player with a ball begins dribbling around. The Pirate tries to steal a ball from any player and pass it out of the circle - now, the two players are Pirates and go after the others...then three, then four. Finally, only one player is left with a ball, and he/she becomes the Pirate for the next round.

Variation: Bomber. Just like Pirate except that the player who is "it" has a ball and tries to roll or throw it at the other players and knock their ball out of the circle.

Kick Out
Everyone dribbles and shields their ball within a circle while tr ying to kick everyone else's ball out and simultaneously protecting their own. You cannot kick someone else's ball out if your ball isn't in the circle. If your ball goes out, you have to leave the circle until to gets down to two players in a duel. The coach may need to participate to keep the game from becoming too competitive, as the ones eliminated early may feel badly.

Egg Hunt

Have more players than balls (the more balls, the better). Have the players line up across one end of the field. Take the balls and spread them out around the field (the eggs). At the other end of the field is a goal called the basket. Blow the whistle and turn them loose. The object of the game is to get all the eggs into the basket as quickly as possible. The players are all on the same team and aren't allowed to take a ball away from another player. Time them to see how fast they can accomplish the task.

Coaching Corner: Fun Games for Under 8s (Part 2)

Several of these games are "knock-out" games where the losers are knocked out and the last player left is the winner. Since the first ones out are often the ones who need the most practice, the ones knocked out should be required to do something to either get back into the game or to keep them working on their ball skills until the game is over.

Give and Go

This one is good for getting the kids to move after they make a pass. It is appropriate for kids a little older who pass the ball but like to stop and really admire their better passes.

Everyone spaces themselves around the center circle. Give the ball to one person and they call out someone's name and pass to them. They then run to the receiver's position in the circle. Upon hearing their name, the receiver steps forward to receive the pass and yells, "I got it!" The sequence is then repeated. Several things are accomplished besides getting them used to movement. The "I got it!" yell addresses the problem of no one playing the ball in a game because they thought the other player was going to play it. We all learn each other's names quickly,

Invariably, someone is always left out, so start a countdown from 10 to zero and the players have to figure out who has been left out (the left out person should be quiet). The other players start yelling among themselves to figure out who's being left out and this fosters communication on the field. (It's pretty humorous, too.)

After a few practices, the players get the game down so they look pretty sharp. Then, toss in another ball. They love it. Now they have to think a bit because people are moving and two are busy with another ball.

Marbles

Split your team into two groups and line them up behind two opposing lines. Each player should have a ball. Place an unusual color (or size) ball in the middle. This is the marble (a No. 2 ball works well). Have them try to move the marble across the other team's line by striking it with a ball. After the game starts, don't require them to use their own ball-they are free to use any other ball they can find.

At first the players may get realy excited and kick the marble. If this happens, call time out and replace it.

Variation : Eliminate the teams and play in a circle. The game ends when the ball leaves the circle.

Teach The Parents

During the last practice of the season, have a scrimmage between the parents and the players (with the coaches helping the players). This serves a couple of purposes. The players love this game. They get the opportunity to show their parents what they can do and they enjoy beating them (the parents never win; the coaches make sure of that...). Also, since many of the parents have never played soccer, it shows them how difficult the game really is. The hope is that a parent will now think twice before yelling at a child for missing an "easy" shot in a game. Everyone seems to enjoy this scrimmage.

Toby,

I received this from our marketing department.  Could you include the body of the text into your next newsletter to see if someone out there has a real good story.  They can send the story to me and we will pick the top 3 and then I will send them to this gentleman.  He will pick the one he wants and hopefully we will be able to get that book for the winner.  I so much appreciate this if you can do it for us.  Thanks

Subject: futsal story

I am writing an encyclopedia of hobbies and interests for the North American market. In addition to a description, photos, and resources, a personal story will be featured to help readers understand the activity better.

Would you have such a story? If you do, all you have to do is share the basic information after which I will write the story (in about 100 words). I will then send you the draft for corrections. The story would be featured as your quote, with your credits. (And you'd receive an at-cost discount when the book is published. I work hard to keep its cost as low as possible.) Maybe you have something funny, interesting or exciting? Examples are below.

Warm regards,

Toni Bos
tonibos@videotron.ca

For example: The hockey story recounts the exciting last 5 minutes of a critical game.

One of the disc (frisbee) sports is about an amateur who scored three amazing points against a pro.

And the ringette story is about a little girl who just lost her mother. She joined ringette even though she had no skating or team sports experience. After 6 years, she is now a vibrant, confident athlete preparing for a national competition.

The animal trekking story is about a llama that was always left loose in camp at night. The problem was that occasionally he became bored and would charge into camp in the middle of the night. When everyone came running out of their tents in a panic, he'd look as if saying, "While you're up, can I have a cookie??"
